Back In Stock The fifth and final instalment in Joe Gibbs' legendary African Dub LPs. This one didn't get released until 1984, a full four years after its predecessor, which goes some way to explain it's distinctive sounds compared to the other four volumes (all of which were released in the 70s).
Always open to the opportunities created by new technology, the Mighty Two here embrace the sound of the 80's - the mighty synth. The inclusion of synths in their dubs had already started as early back as in the Chapter 2 of the series but it's here that the sound really gets explored to its fullest. And the results are pretty spectacular.
"Military Intervention" is probably the best illustration of their success in merging the sound or traditional dub with the new sonic frontiers opened up by the synth. The result is a fascinating union of the worlds of Jamaican dub with the newer sounds of electro and even early house that were emerging in the US. A really great and innovative tune that's frankly worth the entrance price alone on this record.
However it doesn't stop there. The whole album is littered with fascinating highlights ranging from the dreamy cosmic opener "The Day After" to the sparser industrial leaning "Bad Verdict." A much underrated dub album that definitely deserves more recognition than it gets.
