Monumental reissue incoming!
Cologne's always on point Week—End Records continue their run of essential reggae and dub reissues with one of greatest and most important dub LPs ever delivered in its original (and very rare) format.
Lee Perry's 14 Dub Black Board Jungle was originally released in very small quantities (300 I believe) in 1973 making it a likely contender for the much disputed title of first ever dub LP. Whether or not it was the first there is no disputing that it was by far the most creative and at that time pushed the dub production process to new heights establishing it as a standalone artform where the mixing desk engineer was the artist (which it could be argued marked the birth the modern day electronic producer). With the assistance of King Tubby and his mixing desk at 18 Dromilly Avenue Lee Perry crafted is own vision for the emerging genre which was typically unique, inspired and heavily psychedelic including snippets of sound effects and spoken word alongside the pioneering dubwise mixing techniques of echo and reverb.
What makes this particular reissue so important and different to other subsequent versions of this landmark record is that it matches the original 14 strong tracklist and, crucially, the ground breaking stereo recording technique which I believe was the very first example of stereo being used on any reggae record. The last time it was reissued in this format was over 20 years ago and that pressing now goes for £££ on Discogs,
As with all Week—End Records releases a lot of thought has gone into the presentation and it is served up in a embossed sleeve with a design that matches the original pressing (the first time this has happened with any of the reissues I think) and is accompanied by an 8 page 12" booklet with liner notes by David Katz (Lee ”Scratch” Perry's official biographer and author of the recent and most excellent ”Dub Revolution”) as well as interview with On-U Sound boss man and long time Scratch collaborator Adrian Sherwood.
