Very intriguing record here from Dream Baby Dream on Italy's Hell Yeah Records.

The eponymous title of the record provides an immediate musical reference to the iconic Suicide track but sonically this only tells half the story. On the back of the record further clues are given where special thanks are given not only given to Alan Vega and Martin Rev but also to Lee Scratch Perry, John Carpenter and Angelo Badalamenti. This starts to give you the idea that this is a record that crosses several genres and boundaries and that's always something that going to grab my attention as well as my listening ear.

Post-punk and synth might be the starting point but there's also a healthy dose of dub that runs throughout the whole LP alongside the welcome dash of dark dubby disco. Also what really sets it apart is the exceptional vocals from Leah Touch which give it a sound quite unlike anything else out there at the moment. The result feels like a 2024 update on the mysterious dub/post-punk/disco of Saada Bonaire combined with the bass heavy synth/dub fusion of contemporaries like Froid Dub and Sordid Sound System.

In short there's a lot here to get excited abut here. From the sublime sub bass ambience of opener "Love Zone" to the slo-mo dub funk of "Badalamenti On Fries" to the dark dub disco chug of "Diskoteka" this is a record that takes its references from the past but presents them a way that sounds distinctly fresh, futuristic and pleasingly otherworldly.

Highly recommended.
