Dubwise Vinyl Exclusive Very excited and honoured to be ale to offer copies of this exceptional and very unique sounding privately pressed record from Geneva's Komet City.
As with many of the best records I've stocked there is a nice little backstory to this one. A couple of years back one of my trusty Dubwsie Vinyl followers got in touch as they'd come across this record and they thought it was something I'd like. Which I did. Very much. I managed to hunt down a copy with I bought direct from the artist and it went on to become one of my favourite releases of that year. I kept on meaning to get back in touch with the artist to enquire whether I would be able to buy a batch to put in the shop but as is often the case I got distracted by other things and just never got round to it.
Then a few months back I noticed "kometcity" had started following me on Instagram and the name rang a bell... Once I'd worked out that it was the same person who'd made this record we got chatting and the end result is that (nearly two years after I first heard it) I finally have copies for sale to offer you here.
So onto the music... the most succinct description comes from the back of the record itself where it states it is "inspired by some Caribbean music and Durutti Column." In fact the sublime opening track "Precious Forest" (which I featured in the mix I did for NTS last year) sounds pretty much what I imagine Durutti Column jamming at King Tubby's would sound like. It only took me a minute of listening to it before I was completely smitten and I knew I was onto something very special here.
The rest of the LP continues in a similar fashion with mostly instrumental cuts alongside three vocals cuts from BB Seaton, Gilbert Forever and (wait for it) the late great Lee Scratch Perry (which I believe was one of the very last recordings he ever did before leaving us for the great mixing desk in the sky). In fact the presence and influence of Scratch feels strong throughout the whole record, not only in the way it presents a very personal and unique sounding take on the reggae and dub genre but also through its playful use of drum machines (apparently over 10 different types were used) and the way it combines dub experimentalism with a strong pop sensibility.
As you can probably tell I love this record and I'm pretty sure you will be too so I sincerely hope that by stocking it the shop and writing about it here I will in my own small way help bring it to the wider audience it deserves.
